Burwell Village Carnival

WE'RE BACK!... with Burwell Carnival once again, on Sat.25th June 2022, following an enforced 2 year absence due to the covid pandemic. We did however manage to put on a highly successful Burwell Community Festival Day on September 4th 2021 on Margaret Field, which was attended by over 2500 people, and we're looking forward to running another of those on Sat.3rd September 2022, Margaret Field (community group stalls/games only as there is no space for craft/commercial stalls - sorry!) Watch this space and our Facebook event page for further details. However, before then we are preparing for Carnival, having made a few changes to hopefully streamline things and make the overall organisation/event running easier, please see below for further details.

Many thanks

Burwell Carnival Team

Burwell Carnival, and now our Festival Day, delivers a time when our community can come together and celebrate everything about our growing village!

Burwell Carnival Parade 2022

Our parade procession theme for 2022 is "PROTECT OUR PLANET" - abbreviated to 'POP', we are asking local groups or local individuals who would like to participate, to create a 'float' which demonstrates the changes they have made to literally protect our planet, showing how as a group or an individual they are working with nature, reusing/recycling/sustainability focused, driving initiatives to reduce carbon footprint, omissions and improve the local  environment, the air we breathe and the way we live day to day!

To ease our stress/anxiety, maybe yours, paraders will now assemble at the Ex-Service Club car park and be human powered only = "Push, Pull, Pedestrian, Pedal" (NO vehicles are permitted as a float this year: scooters, bicycles, skateboards, wheelbarrows etc may be used to make your eco-float for the procession or do you need a float at all ??? - just parade 'as you are', creating the minimum of your own group name placard/banner!) Starting at 1.30pm (so time for little/big ones to have some lunch!), making it's way down The Causeway, turning left into Hythe Lane and straight onto The Recreation Ground up to our stage area 2pm (ish). Parents of kids involved, family/friends and fellow Burwellians will hopefully line the route and particularly welcoming the parade onto Burwell Recreation Ground.

We are looking for innovation in the communication of  your POP initiatives with planet friendly, eco diversity, sustainability, less is more at the core. This will save resources, materials, time and money for everyone and truly reflect our village awareness of the very critical need to POP - PROTECT OUR PLANET.

Current local group parade choices and the order that they will be parading in:

Please remember to bring your loose change for our bucket collection during the parade and give to the bucketeers on the gate as you enter the Recreation Ground. Collecting buckets will also be placed  at the bar & raffle stall. Please give generously as this is an essential part of Carnival fundraising – thank you.

At 1:30pm the Carnival parade will leave  the Ex-Service Club car park and proceed down The Causeway, turning left into Hythe Lane  and then everyone will enter the Recreation Ground.  All the parade participants will assemble in front of the stage, surrounded by Carnival goers , where the announcements will be made as to who has won the best parade participation with two runners up. This is intended to be at 2pm.

The Carnival bar will be selling real ale, lagers, ciders and Pimms by the jug/glasses, along with wine, prosecco (by the bottle), spirits & soft drinks. We also have a wide choice of food vendors: Handy Plaice, Pizza Pazzione, Purple Pepper, Meat & Greet, HitWrap Hong Kong Street Food, Waffle & Co., Donuts, Toni's Ices & The Coffee Station.

Carnival attractions include inflatables, activities and fair rides for children and adults, including Shredder Skate School competitions on the skate park - 2-5.30pm. Entertainment & displays will be on stage and in the arenas  throughout the afternoon. The crescendo of the carnival will be the bands we have invited to entertain you, so get ready to sing and dance and party into the night. The bands booked this year are:

Anorak @ 6.30pm
A female-fronted indie band formed by 4 local teenagers based around the Cambridgeshire/Suffolk border.

Akimbo @ 7.45pm
Playing both types of music. ROCK...and ROLL!!

Submarine Racers @ 9.30pm
Covering current and past classic hits from 60s pop to new wave to rock and everything in between, a fun and entertaining cover band playing favourites and creating a party atmosphere that will make your event rock! With a twist of rock 'n' roll, a little bit of soul and a dash of dance-floor classics, we'll having you dancing the night away playing music from the 50s to the present day by artists including Elvis, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams, Jackie Wilson, Jake Bugg, The Rolling Stones, Kings of Leon, The Beach Boys and many many more...

So, there’s no need to go anywhere as we have everything you need for a ‘free to enter’, full and fun family day out. Finally folks, do tell your friends to come along or bring them with you. Do bring chairs and rugs but please no glassware, own alcohol (otherwise we could lose our license) or bad behaviour – thank you!

Enjoy a full day & evening at Burwell Carnival!
